With the August heat wave and temps reaching 100+ in areas like this. It has prompted me to hit the trail before sunrise, hike all morning and then go back home and hit the beach for the afternoon. What a treat to get the best of both worlds in a California day.

Penasquitos Canyon
I've only poked into this canyon a couple times just before sunset. This time Robbie and I were up early and set out to explore the canyon. We made it to the falls (cascades) and then went off trail for a bit (with our friends the ticks) and checked out some isolated ponds. These trails are from one extreme to another, back and forth from wide open rolling grasslands to sycamore forests to rock hopping along the creek. It's pretty cool area for a half day hike with plenty of time afterword to hit the beach.
